Low Testosterone Replacement Therapy & Treatment

by Geetinder Goyal, MD Founder & CEO of First Primary Care

When we started this practice, we really had no significant clue about how much prevalence there is in terms of testosterone replacement therapies and centers out there.

We were getting patients coming to us telling us how they’ve been getting testosterone replacement shots from popular “T-clinics” or, sometimes, even off the streets.

This really forced us to start looking more into testosterone—causes of deficiency, when we should replace it, and what the best way to replace it is.

Signs Of Low Testosterone
In general, symptoms of low testosterone are:

  • Low energy
  • Muscle mass loss
  • Low libido (i.e. low sexual energy)
  • Mood changes
  • Depression
  • Bone health, low testosterone can affect bones and lead to osteopenia or osteoporosis.
What to do if you have symptoms:

If you feel like you have certain symptoms that could be due to low testosterone, go see your doctor.

First, you and your doctor will investigate your levels. If they are low, then there needs to be a careful investigation into why the levels are low in the first place.

Then, if you and your doctor decide to do testosterone replacement therapy, you have to carefully evaluate what the options are to get the testosterone levels back up to what’s normal for you.

“In general, there is a lack of awareness about the role of testosterone in our bodies.”

What’s normal for testosterone?

In general, there is a lack of awareness about the role of testosterone in our bodies.

Wth aging, the levels of testosterone drop in everybody’s body.

That’s why it’s important to figure out if your low levels are:

  1. Part of your normal aging process, or
  2. if there’s an underlying cause that is leading to low testosterone

Depending on the cause, you can have different symptoms or a different progression of the disease.

What about those Low T clinics?
A lot of the issues of our fragmented healthcare stem from a broken primary care system. Because there is no good primary care access, a lot of people in need of treatment are going to T clinics.
In my opinion, these clinics are a dangerous trend, because when you go to a T clinic, they are focusing on treating only that one problem.
At T clinics, they aren’t evaluating any underlying issues, looking out for how other areas of your body are being affected, or putting treatment into the context of your overall health.

This is why getting testosterone evaluations, treatment, and ongoing monitoring can be done a lot better at the primary care level.

Finding Affordable Treatment
The other important thing to talk about when we talk about testosterone is pricing.
After speaking with patients who tried T clinics before joining us, we were shocked to see how much they were spending on a monthly basis to have a consultation, get the drug, and do lab work.
Treatment is way more expensive at those clinics than it is our direct primary care model.
So, not only is the quality of care better in our model, but there is also a significant drop in cost.
